A perennial problem with installing control and measurement systems in industrial environments is cabling. Installing and maintaining the reliable operation of cable networks can be very difficult in factories and larger industrial facilities where buildings may be remote. Roads, railways and even rivers may need to be crossed creating their own sets of health and safety hazards. Cable faults can easily be caused by mechanical damage and the environment resulting in costly lost production and safety issues which could result in life hazard, damage to process equipment and unnecessary plant shut-down.

The recent advent of compact, high reliability short range wireless devices has allowed Deeter to develop a wireless sensor system which can transform industrial control and measuring systems. Greatly reducing the cost and time required to install, increasing convenience and reliability and enabling simple relocation of sensors should factory layout change. In addition Deeter probes are battery powered removing the additional layer of installation complexity of providing mains power in remote locations for conventional measuring instruments.

.A Deeter Wireless Sensor System may include a number of Wireless Routers to form a wireless ‘mesh’ network. This allows signals to be automatically re-routed around any broken links in the mesh creating a built-in self-healing capability to further ensure communications reliability.

The Deeter Wireless Sensor System will be welcomed by control engineers in industrial and manufacturing industries such as food and beverages, cooling systems and agriculture.

System Applications and Features
The Deeter Wireless Sensor System was primarily designed for use in liquid level sensing, to complement the very popular existing range of Deeter float-switches and continuous level sensors. Countless other applications for the Deeter Wireless Sensor system are possible, including:
• remote monitoring of switch inputs to drive relay outputs
• converting a potentiometer input to a 4-to-20mA current loop output
• mirroring a 4-to-20mA current loop signal
• switching relays at preset input thresholds

The System has the following advanced features:
• Sophisticated RF Communications and Wireless Network capability
• Fully automatic operation once the system is installed
• Battery powered remote sensors

RF Communications
The system uses very reliable high power RF transceiver modules and rugged external antennae to achieve the best possible wireless communication range. Range can be further extended by adding one or more Deeter Wireless Routers which receive and re-transmit the signal with increased gain. The Base Station acts as the coordinator for the wireless network and operates in the 2.4GHz ISM (Instrumentation Scientific and Medical) frequency band. This allows the system to be used world-wide without requiring a site radio operating license. Local regulations may restrict the maximum RF transmit power and Deeter provide different variants of the Wireless System devices for the USA, Canadian and European markets to satisfy these constraints. The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol used in the Deeter Wireless Sensor System allows several networks to share the same frequency without interfering with each other. The protocol uses sophisticated techniques to ensure good communications using very low power signaling. This allows the Deeter Wireless Sender or LVCS-RF (RF Liquid Vertical Continuous Sensor) probe to operate using battery power. Once the system is installed it will operate reliably for extended periods without any further intervention. When several Routers are used they form a ‘mesh’ network, and signals can be re-routed around any broken links in the mesh. Thus, the system has a built-in self-healing capability to further ensure communications reliability.

Wireless Range
At maximum transmission power (USA version) the distance between sensor node and Base Station may be up to 4km in an ideal, open field installation. For operation in Europe, regulations restrict the maximum transmission power and a range of up to 1000m may be possible. However, in most practical environments the radio signal will be attenuated by obstructions and by multi-path fading caused by reflections. To improve range, a clearer signal path can often be achieved by increasing the height of the antenna and Deeter supply an antenna extension kit for this purpose. A Deeter Wireless Router placed somewhere between the remote sensor and Base Station, or off to one side of the direct line between the two, will greatly extend the wireless range and up to four Routers may be used in a single system.

System Devices
There are four devices currently in the Deeter Wireless Sensor product range:
• Base Station
• Wireless Sender
• LVCS-RF Liquid Vertical Continuous Sensor probe
• Wireless Router

A basic Wireless Sensor System comprises a Base Station and a single sensor node, either a Sender or LVCS-RF. A Router may be added to the system to improve communications reliability or to extend the wireless range. Up to four Routers may be used in a single system.
The sensor nodes can accept a range of input devices to suit the application:
• Four switch inputs (Sender only)
• An analog resistive input (Sender and LVCS-RF)
• A 4-to-20mA current-loop sensing input (Sender only)

The Base Station has a range of outputs to drive a wide variety of possible
devices:
• Four open-collector transistors for relay operation etc.
• 4-to-20mA current loop driver
• Serial communications output via RS232, RS485 or USB
(At present, serial communications is reserved for diagnostic data. Future
developments are expected to include data-logging features.)

New Deeter Low Volume Liquid Dispenser offers automated control and monitoring

Temperature Compensated

Automatic Calibration

The Deeter Group, market leaders in the design, development and manufacture of electronic sensors and control systems, announce the introduction of their new Low Volume Liquid Dispenser. Intended for accurate, repeatable dosing of small volumes of chemicals, colors or flavorings, the Low Volume Liquid Dispenser may be used to control any liquid being dispensed in a laboratory or manufacturing process.

The new Low Volume Liquid Dispenser is designed to deliver a measured volume of liquid at the press of a button. In normal use, the operator selects a volume, presses a button and the Dispenser delivers the required volume without further operator intervention. The volume required is simple to set and the dose is retained in non-volatile memory for repeat operations. Volumes between 0.025 liters and 10 liters can be selected in increments of 0.001 liters.

The Dispenser will accurately measure volumes over a flow rate range of between 0.2 liters/minute and 2.5 liters/minute and will automatically compensate for the effects of varying flow-rates and changes in liquid temperature. A calibration menu allows fine adjustments to the compensation.

The Low Volume Liquid Dispenser has two John Guest Speedfit® 8mm push-fit connectors for input and output of fluids. Wetted surfaces are nylon, PTFE, Buna and acetyl, making the Low Volume Liquid Dispenser suitable for a wide range of fluids over a temperature range of +1 to +65ºC. Operator controls consist of a three-button keypad and a liquid crystal display. The display shows the selected volume and progress during dispensing. A number of additional features are available through the keypad, including pause and restart during dispensing, cancelling dispensing, and manual ‘top-up’ control.

Peter Whiteaker, Managing Director of The Deeter Group comments; ”We have over twenty years of experience in designing fluid dispensers and our new Low Volume Liquid Dispenser will be ideal for single users in laboratories to automated systems for low volume dosing. This new design features temperature controlled accuracy and the convenience of having software provided for control and monitoring from a PC.”

The Dispenser has a serial communication option to enable automated control and monitoring by an external computer using the software provided. Communication is via USB ‘A to B’ cable and the Low Volume Liquid Dispenser is powered by a low-voltage supply, making it safe to use in damp environments or if liquid is spilt. A 12VDC mains socket adapter is supplied with each Dispenser.

An audible ‘beep’ option is provided to indicate when dispensing has stopped and a further option will produce continuous ‘beeps’ if the flow rate is outside of the limits for accurate volume measurement. These audio options can be enabled or disabled through a display menu and are also saved to non-volatile memory and are restored to the operator’s preference after power-up.

The Deeter Group product range includes level sensors, complete wireless sensing systems, leak detectors, level indicators and control equipment, industrial weighing equipment, reed and proximity switches, boiler control equipment, litz and magnetic wire and termination assemblies.
Deeter Announce Free Wireless Sensor System Site Survey Service

The Deeter Group, market leaders in the design, development and manufacture of electronic sensors and control systems, announce the introduction of a free site survey service for customers considering the implementation of a Deeter or any other wireless sensor network operating in the 2.4GHz ISM band.

Deeter’s own wireless sensor networks may be used to remotely monitor temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, liquid level, float or proximity switches or any sensor connected to a 4-20mA control loop. Deeter wireless sensor networks are very versatile and can range from a simple single sensor measurement to complex multi sensor and multi-vendor systems with mixed sensor inputs and routers to extend wireless range and offer self-healing mesh networks.

With the availability of a specially designed Wireless Survey tool, a free survey carried out by the Deeter Group will allow potential customers to confirm that their installation environment is suitable for reliable wireless communication and determine the optimum locations for sensor transmitters, routers and receiver base stations.

Alan Marsh, Sales Manager at Deeter Group Ltd. Comments; ”We have had a great deal of interest in our wireless sensor networks from potential new customers and existing users of conventional cable connected sensor and process control systems. The most common reasons expressed for any reluctance to replace costly to install and damage-prone cabled systems with wireless are reliability and security. Our wireless systems have high security encrypted signals and robust wireless communication. To demonstrate this we now offer a free site survey. A fast and reliable way to demonstrate the suitability of our wireless sensor systems actually at our customer’s sites and to offer guidance on how to get the best results, whether from a single sensor or a complex self-healing mesh network.”

To get the best performance out of a wireless sensor system it is essential to ensure that all sensors (Deeter Senders) and receivers (Deeter Base stations or Routers) are optimally located and that other radio emitters, which may cause interference, are kept to a minimum. The most reliable way to ensure this is to use a Deeter Site Survey Tool, or have a free site survey carried out.

Depending on the scale of the intended installation following a few basic steps will make any installation proceed smoothly and ensure maximum results from the wireless network immediately.

Ensure a comprehensive site plan of the area or areas where the wireless sensor system is to be installed is available and identify major building obstacles such as walls, halls, elevators and floors that may block radio signals.

Determine the most likely locations for the receivers (Deeter Base Stations or Routers) in order that they may be connected inward to the proposed receiver or so that they can route the wireless signal onwards towards the main network connection. As a guide, receiver locations should avoid being close to metal or concrete walls and as close to the ceiling as possible.

For the test a Deeter Survey Tool Sender is placed where the Base Station will be situated. The Deeter Survey Tool Base Station is then used to check the coverage and strength of the received signal, at each of the proposed locations of the sensor transmitters. In some installations repeaters or routers will be required; the survey tools will help determine the best location for them to be placed to ensure all signals are received back at the Base Station

The Deeter Group, market leaders in the design, development and manufacture of electronic sensors and control systems, announce the introduction of their new Liquid Volume Dispenser. Typical applications include dosing of chemicals, colors, flavorings or control of any liquid being dispensed in a manufacturing process or laboratory.

The Deeter Liquid Volume Dispenser will repeatedly deliver a precise, operator selected, measured volume of liquid at the press of a button. The unit features automatic calibration and is temperature compensated to ensure accurate dosing across the wide temperature range of possible fluids being delivered. A USB data-link and control software suite is provided to allow users to externally control the Liquid Volume Dispenser and collect data for logging and archiving.

The liquid volume required is simple to select and the setting is retained in non-volatile memory for repeat operation. Volumes between 0.10 liters and 100.00 liters can be selected in increments of 0.01 liters. The dispenser will accurately measure volumes over a flow rate range of between 0.6 liters/minute and 5 liters/minute.

Peter Whiteaker, Managing Director of Deeter Group comments;”We designed our first fluid dispenser over twenty years ago. We now see a growing market in many manufacturing and laboratory applications and our new design offers customers temperature controlled accuracy and the convenience of control or data-logging via an external computer.”

The Deter Liquid Volume Dispenser has two Speedfit® push-fit connectors for fluid in and out. These can accommodate a tube with an outside diameter of 8mm. Wetted surfaces are nylon, PTFE, Buna and acetal, making the Liquid Volume Dispenser suitable for a wide range of fluids.

Operator controls consist of a three-button keypad and a liquid crystal display. The display shows the selected volume and progress during dispensing. A number of additional features are available through the keypad, including pause and restart during dispensing, cancelling dispensing, and manual ‘top-up’ control.

The Liquid Volume Dispenser is powered by a low-voltage supply, making it safe to use if liquid is spilt and a 12VDC mains socket adapter is supplied with each dispenser. Fluid temperature range is +1 to +65ºC and the unit is housed in a 175x125x78mm enclosure. It offers a flow rate range of 0.6 to 5.0 liters per minute with a dispensing volume accuracy of -3%+0% over the flow rate range. Fluid connections are via 8mm outside diameter tube which may be polyethylene, polyurethane, nylon, brass, copper or stainless steel.

The Deeter Group product range includes level sensors, complete wireless sensing systems, leak detectors, level indicators and control equipment, industrial weighing equipment, reed and proximity switches, boiler control equipment, litz and magnetic wire and termination assemblies.
Custom Sensors are “Standard” for Deeter

The Deeter Group, market leaders in the design, development and manufacture of electronic sensors and control systems, produces a very wide range of level sensor solutions for liquids; from simple water level switches and units designed as pure water level sensors to the very popular 20 series compact float switch and the advanced LVCS continuous liquid level sensor.

Between 70 to 80% of all sensors manufactured by Deeter in their UK factory are now custom designs. This is not as daunting as it might seem as with its long experience and a back catalog of many hundreds of designs a new custom design can usually be put together from a combination of pre-designed parts and control circuits.

Peter Whiteaker, Managing Director of Deeter Group comments; ”More than 15 years experience of manufacturing sensors has clearly demonstrated that no matter how many standard products we design, customers will frequently want something different “. Our ability to draw on our vast experience allows us to design and deliver custom sensors very quickly with low engineering and tooling costs and in quantities that meet our customers’ needs.”

This depth of experience means that in most cases a totally new custom design can be created in 2-3 weeks with the only design costs the customer has to bear being that of the assembly drawing – costing in the region of £30.00 – and with no large minimum order conditions. All mechanical parts, circuit design and PCB design is done in-house helping to ensure the quality and reliability The Deeter Group is known for.

Deeter custom sensors offer a wide range of float designs for different liquids with different specific gravities and probe materials including corrosion free food grade 316L stainless steel, PVC and polypropylene for water and acid monitoring systems. Sensing may be via reed relays or hall-effect diodes and sensor length, control head and output cable may all be customer specified.

To accompany their custom continuous sensors Deeter has a bespoke digital display unit designed for simple panel mounting which can accommodate an appropriate LED bar-graph display and legend.

Examples of custom sensor systems from Deeter include simple water level sensors, float level switches, fuel level sensor or level indicators for almost any fluid. Installations include; agricultural vehicles, tractors and lawnmowers; rainwater harvesting; header tanks; bilge, water and fuel tanks on boats; road paving machines; nuclear submarines; breweries; aircraft fuel tanks and many more.

The Deeter Group product range includes level sensors, complete wireless sensing systems, industrial weighing equipment, reed and proximity switches, security switches, termination assemblies, litz and magnetic wire and solar power systems.
